Project description:

Habitat for Humanity Serving Winona County proposes the construction of a new twin home on Hilbert Street in Winona, Minnesota, adding two permanently affordable units to the local housing stock. Each unit will offer one to three bedrooms with an attached garage, thoughtfully designed to meet the needs of households at varying life stages.

All Habitat Winona County homes are built for durability, energy efficiency, and long-term affordability. This project will be constructed slab-on-grade using insulated concrete forms from foundation to trusses, paired with a reinforced roofing system ensuring exceptional structural integrity, thermal performance, and resilience over time. These construction methods reduce long-term maintenance costs for homeowners while supporting Minnesota’s goals for energy efficiency and climate resilience.

Each unit will be designed with aging-in-place and accessibility at the forefront. Features include 36-inch doorways, ADA-compliant turning radii in bathrooms and kitchens, and layouts that support mobility and safety. These universal design elements ensure the homes remain functional and dignified for residents across generations, from young families to seniors seeking stability.

Hard construction costs for the project are estimated between $450,000 and $500,000. Through Habitat’s affordable homeownership model, these high-quality homes will remain within reach for income-qualified households, expanding access to safe, stable, and equitable housing in Winona while strengthening the community for decades to come.

This project is made possible due to partnership with City of Winona.
